Karnataka Reduces Prices Of Curd And Lassi After Backlash

The recent news that came in spoke about how the GST council had decided to levy 5% GST on dairy products. Dairy products are a daily necessity and their prices going up is certainly not something very acceptable. Karnataka too had increased the prices of curd and lassi owing to the GST council’s decision but just a day after it had to pull down the prices because of the backlash that came in its way.

Karnataka Milk Federation Faced Backlash From People

On Monday, Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) reduced the prices of curd and lassi which were hiked because of the 5% GST application after facing heavy backlash from both people and opposite parties. The cooperative major, which sells dairy goods under the brand name Nandini and had raised the prices by ₹ 2-3, has lowered the hike by 50 paise to ₹1.5 for a variety of products. KMF has reduced the prices keeping in mind the interest of the customers and have revised the prices of Nandini curd, lassi and buttermilk. A 200gm Nandini curd pouch price was hiked to ₹12 from ₹10 is now reduced to ₹10.5. Similarly a 500 gm curd pouch cost ₹22 and was hiked to ₹24 is now reduced to ₹23.

Citizens and Leaders Opposed The Sudden Hike

The hike in the price of dairy products like lassi, curd, etc. was opposed heavily by the citizens and many leaders of the opposite party who also went down on the Centre and State government. The citizens thought it was not right of the government’s party to levy taxes on dairy products as right now they already are facing the pressure of inflation with the prices of most things going up. The opposition party leader reacted on the tax levied and questioned the finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the Centre about the concept of Acche Din when they are levying taxes on everything, now including dairy products.
