Metros On Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Stretch Will Run On Sundays Too

Taking to the X platform, Metro Railway Kolkata (@metrorailwaykol) shared this amazing news and also added all the necessary updates.

Commuters of Kolkata and Howrah, we have great news. Metro services on the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade stretch will be available every Sunday. Starting from September 1, passengers can board metros during the operational hours on the East-West Metro’s stretch connecting Howrah Maidan and Esplanade. Interestingly, this is the iconic and historical metro route whose portion runs under the Ganga River.

It has been a few months since the commercial operations started on this metro stretch providing the most unique experiences to all passengers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kolkata in March 2024 to inaugurate India’s first underwater metro tunnel in the City of Joy. After opening the services, he also took a ride on this spectacular metro from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan.

Initially, the services started on this route with metros operating from Mondays to Saturdays. The decision faced criticism on the Internet as passengers expected more frequency of metro rides and they wanted services on Sundays too. After more than 5 months, the frequency of operations has been updated. From September 1, passengers can travel on metros on the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade stretch on Sundays within the specified timeline.
