April was nothing less than a severely horrifying month when it comes to weather conditions in many parts of India. One of the cities where the temperatures escalated high was Kolkata and it even exceeded 40°C on a few days. And this was accompanied by horrible heatwaves. Stepping out of the houses felt like getting hit by a ball of hot air. Let’s take a look at how the weather conditions in Kolkata were different in April 2024 than in other months.

From minimum to maximum temperatures, everything surged in the previous month. The experience of being outside during summers in Kolkata seems terrible during the summer season in general. But this year felt hotter than ever and kind of unbearable. The day temperatures saw an uptick of 6°C in a period between 2019 and 2024. The weather was quite intolerable and there were very few commuters on the usually bustling roads, even on weekdays.

SwitchON Foundation is a Kolkata-based NGO and it recently released a report named “Heatwave havoc in April, a month of record-breaking temperature”. The information stated here focuses on the transition in weather reported in Kolkata in April. The foundation has sourced data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and more departments.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the maximum temperature surged to 40°C for 9 consecutive days. In fact, the lowest minimum temperature reported in April was 0.9 degrees higher than usual. The lowest recorded temperature was 24.7°C. The previous month witnessed a scary increase of 5 degrees of minimum temperature in Kolkata in the period from 2019 to 2024.

What Are Some Other Updates?

It was on April 30, 2024, when the West Bengal capital witnessed the maximum temperature in the last 50 years. The report released by the SwitchON Foundation stated that the temperature was 43°C on that day. It was a jump of 7.4 degrees in comparison to usual.

In addition to this rise in temperatures, the last month also experienced the highest temperatures on 90 per cent of days. This data is in comparison to April 2019. Also, comparing April 2019 and 2024, Kolkatans woke up to more minimum temperatures during 93 per cent of the previous month.

Along with extreme heat, the city is not receiving much rainfall in comparison to the previous years and it is indeed a concern. The weather has been terribly harsh not just in Kolkata but in most parts of West Bengal. From Nadia to Bankura to Purulia, the temperatures rose beyond 40°C in many places. Many people fell sick after being unable to tolerate the scorching heat.
