London Railway Station Gets Bengali Signage; Mamata Banerjee Applauds

The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee had once expressed the idea of converting Kolkata into London. Soon after, a replica of London’s Big Ben came up in Kolkata’s Laketown. What’s more, the CM planned to renovate the banks of river Hoogly on the lines of the Thames. Now, London too is paying tribute to the Bengali language. The Whitechapel Station in London got a Bengali signage along with the English one. Taking pride in the installation, Banerjee took to Twitter and stated about the increasing worldwide significance of the 1000-year-old Bengali language. She calls it a victory of ‘culture and heritage.

Tower Hamlets Mayor Shares Pictures Of Bilingual Signage At Whitechapel Station

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, had been in the key role behind the installation of the bilingual signage. Taking to Twitter, he has shared some pictures of the station with the Bengali signage. In the caption, he calls Bengali ‘Bangla’. While internationally the language is known as ”Bengali’, native people usually call it ‘Bangla’. Whitechapel Station is one of the historic landmarks in London and it dates back to 1876. Over the years, it has been developed, renovated and expanded. It is now an underground and overground station. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan assisted Biggs in setting up the signage.

Mamata Banerjee Called London A Beautifully Planned City

While planning to turn Kolkata into London, Banerjee had said that London is a beautifully planned city and she wants Kolkata too to be renovated with similar plans, according to a Hindu report. She had added that private players are anticipated to assist with funds as well when the government takes a favourable step towards adorning the city.
