Madhya Pradesh: Milkmen Are Required To Register And Carry Lactometers In Bhind As Part Of New Dairy Regulations

The Food Safety Department in Bhind has introduced new dairy regulations to combat dairy adulteration in the district. Bhind, notorious for tampering with dairy products, has seen a rise in adulteration cases, especially in milk and mawa. The department’s latest move aims to tackle this growing issue.

From now on, every milkman in Bhind must register with the department. This registration will not only bring the sellers into the formal system but also help track and monitor their activities. The milkmen will be required to carry official identity cards issued by the department. This will allow consumers to identify authorised sellers, ensuring the source of their dairy products is legitimate.

In addition to carrying an official ID, milkmen will now be required to carry a lactometer. A lactometer measures the quality of milk by checking its density. This simple tool can help detect adulteration, such as water or other substances mixed into the milk. With the widespread use of lactometers, the department aims to curb the adulteration that has plagued the district for years.

The move comes in response to the rampant adulteration practises that have damaged the reputation of Bhind’s dairy industry. Adulterated milk and mawa have been linked to various health risks, raising alarm among consumers and authorities alike. Mawa, a dairy product often used in sweets, has been particularly vulnerable to tampering due to its high demand in large cities.

The Food Safety Department has stepped up its enforcement efforts in the district. Between January and August, the department registered FIRs against nine individuals involved in adulteration. In more severe cases, three people have been booked under the National Security Act (NSA) for their actions. This reflects the seriousness of the problem and the authorities’ commitment to cracking down on offenders.

During this period, the department collected 326 samples of various food products for testing. Out of these, 51 samples failed quality tests, indicating the presence of adulteration. Dairy products, including milk, mawa, and paneer, accounted for a significant portion of these failed samples. The statistics highlight the extent of the problem and the urgent need for strict measures.
