The Mandi Shivaratri Fair is steeped in legend and tradition, dating back centuries. As per the Hindu calendar, it falls on Krishna Paksha 13th day of the month of Phalguna, corresponding to February/March in the Gregorian calendar. This is when Mandi town earns its rightful title—the ‘Varanasi of the Hills’. And why? Because during these seven sacred days, more than 200 deities from the district’s temples congregate here to partake in the divine festivities.

But what sets Mandi apart is not just the sheer number of deities, but the harmonious blend of spirituality and cultural grandeur that envelopes the town. According to The News Himachal, this year, 216 revered gods and goddesses, will add their divine essence to the festivities. Starting on March 9, the festival will be charged with the energy of devotion and celebration.

The official inauguration will be presided over by the State Chief Minister. It will mark the beginning of this grand extravaganza. Numerous cultural performances take place in the town amid the chants and rituals. Well-known performers take the stage and serenade the crowd with hymns honouring Lord Shiva and calling forth the spirit of Bholenath.

The grandeur of the festival will reach its crescendo on March 12 with the second Shahi Jaleb, a majestic procession. The Mahotsav will draw to a close on March 15, with the final Shahi Jaleb presided over by the Governor and Mandi will bid farewell to another year of divine celebration.
