Lakes in the mountains have a different kind of charm altogether. The pristine and clear waters, the lofty peaks, the rolling terrains, the mists, the beautiful skies and the snow covers make these places truly heaven-like. Switzerland has many such gorgeous mountain lakes. But back in India, there are some mountain lakes in Himachal Pradesh that are actually prettier than the ones in Switzerland. Here are 5 such lakes:

1. Prashar

Perched at a height of 2730 meters, Prashar Lake is one of the most picturesque lakes in Himachal Pradesh, named after Sage Prashar. Near the lake, there is a three-storied pagoda dating back to the thirteenth century which pays homage to the sage. The Prashar Lake is around 49 kilometres north of Mandi.

2. Chandra Tal

Chandra Tal means ‘Lake of the Moon’. And the crescent-shaped lake looks truly surreal in the moonlight. It changes its colour at different times of the day depending on the sky. Mountains crowning over the blue lake glistening under the moonlight and incessant views of the Himalayas have made this place a favourite spot of the campers and trekkers.

3. Suraj Tal

This is the twenty-first highest lake in the world and the third-highest in India. It lies at an altitude of 4890 metres above sea level in the Lahaul Valley. Suraj Tal is the waterbody which enters Jammu and Kashmir as the Chenab river. The words Suraj Tal, or Surya Taal, stand for the ‘Lake of the Sun.’

4. Bhrigu

This glacial lake stays frozen for around six months. It is located in the Kullu district at a height of around 4,300 metres. Bhrigu lake is a popular trekking and hiking site and adventurous activities take place here from nearly May to October. Bhrigu lake embraces a unique splendour that leaves every visitor in awe.

5. Seruvalsar

It is one of the most stunning high altitude lakes located in the Seraj Valley of the Kullu district. Seruvalsar Lake sits an at an altitude of nearly 3,100 metres in the lap of thick forests of oaks, deodars and pines. There is a small temple near the lake, dedicated to Buddhi Nagin.
