This year, Pune has seen a particularly hot April. Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reveals average maximum temperatures exceeding 39 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest April since 2013. Areas like Magarpatta and Koregaon Park have consistently recorded above-normal temperatures, while the minimum temperature has also risen by a noticeable margin.

A scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Vineet Kumar, has taken to X (Formerly, Twitter) to warn of a potential heatwave in Maharashtra. According to Kumar, the latest forecast from the IMD-GFS model suggests scorching temperatures reaching 42-45 degrees Celsius in the state on April 30th and May 1st.

For Pune residents, the rising temperatures necessitate adjustments to daily routines. Opting for lightweight, breathable clothing is key to staying cool. Early mornings and evenings often offer some respite, making them ideal times for outdoor activities. Spending time in air-conditioned spaces during the peak heat hours can also provide much-needed relief. The scorching days also call for responsible water consumption.  Residents are advised to be mindful of their water usage and implement water-saving practices at home. Additionally, staying hydrated throughout the day is crucial to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Despite the rising temperatures, there are some advantages to Pune’s warm April. The dry weather makes it an excellent time for sightseeing and exploring the city’s many outdoor attractions. From historical forts to serene gardens, Pune offers a variety of options for those willing to venture out during the day. Looking ahead, May is expected to usher in even hotter days, with temperatures likely to climb further. However, the arrival of the monsoon season later in the year will bring a welcome change, offering relief from the scorching heat.
