Samruddhi Express Highway Accident: Girder Machine Drops From 100 ft; 15 Killed & 3 Trapped

Tragedy struck the Thane region of Maharashtra recently. A fatal mishap during the construction of Phase III of the Samruddhi Express Highway led to the death of 15, and possibly more. While rescue operations are underway, the tragedy has taken everyone by surprise. A girder machine collapsed and ended up claiming the lives of and injuring many people. Here are all the details that are available regarding the accident so far.

Samruddhi Express Highway Accident:15 Dead; 3 Injured

A girder machine which was being employed for the construction of phase III of the Samruddhi Express Highway collapsed in Thane. In doing so, it claimed the lives of 15 people. In addition to this, reports state that there are at least three more that are trapped beneath the rubble, and are injured.

A girder is an equipment used in the construction of high-speed rail bridges as well as highways. This equipment installs pre-cast box girders on the bridge along with the help of a crane. In the accident, the slab that connected the girder with the crane collapsed and fell.

The entire machine dropped from 100 ft. which led to this terrible disaster. Some reports state that the number of people who are trapped in the rubble may be more, around six. It is also feared that the death toll will also rise.

Rescue Operations Are Underway

The photos from many people’s tweets reveal that the National Disaster Response Force or the NDRF has been dispatched to carry out the rescue and relief operations. Many bodies have been discovered and it is feared that the death toll will rise.

The accident took place in the Shahpur tehsil of the Thane District in the early hours of the 1st of August, Tuesday. The injured have been transported to a local hospital where it is hoped that they will recover.

Samruddhi Express Highway is also known as the Hindu Hrudayasamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg. It is 701 kilometres long and connects Nagpur to Mumbai.
