Recently, the Saudi Culinary Arts Commission named some of the most popular dishes from the 13 regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This comes as a part of the Saudi Culinary Arts Commission’s National And Regional Dishes Narrative Project. Yes, and it was launched earlier in 2023. Not to mention, it has placed the culinary heritage of the kingdom under international spotlight. So, take a look at the popular dishes representing each province, as named by the commission.

Saudi Culinary Arts Commission Chooses Dishes For 13 Provinces

As a part of the ongoing initiative, a selection of regional dishes has been announced by the Saudi Culinary Arts Commission. In case you’re wondering, these 13 dishes are as follows –

Saleeq – Makkah
Sayyadiah – Tabouk
Maqnah Bread – Al-Baha
Madini Rice – Madina
Al-Haneeth – Aseer
Al-Bukayla – Al-Jouf
Al-Mulayhiya – Northern Borders
Keubaibat Hail – Hail
Al-Kleja – Al-Qaseem
Hassawai Rice – Easter Region
Margaouq – Al-Riyadh
Al-Ruqsh – Najran
Al-Maghsh – Jazan

As gathered from the list of dishes mentioned above, some of these are either made with rice, some have been made with meat, while others have been made with flour. Not to mention, they have all been flavoured with a selection of spices, such as pepper, salt, cloves, or even cardamom, as in the case of Saleeq. These dishes and their preparation method along with ingredients have also been posted on the official page of the authority on X.

The Process Of Selection Was Meticulous

At this point, it’s worth mentioning that all of the aforementioned dishes represent a diverse culinary heritage. Moreover, it also promotes a cross-cultural understanding. According to Mayada Badr, CEO of the commission, this process of dish selection was meticulous! Yes, for this, the commission collaborated with the province’s authorities to establish the criteria that allowed them to consider each dish’s significance. As it happens, each of these chosen dishes has their own deep roots within each of their respective regions. Additionally, they also possessed ceremonial aspects, when it came to preparation.

So, whenever you do plan to visit Saudi Arabia or wish to experience Saudi food, don’t forget to keep these 13 dishes in mind.
