Sikkim is one of the most beautiful states in India. Its pristine and picturesque beauty attracts scores of tourists, locals and international alike, every year. However, one of the biggest hindrances it has faced when it comes to tourism is a lack of connectivity. Sikkim has not been a part of the Indian Railway network. But soon, all of this will change. The first railway station in Sikkim has recently begun construction after a wait of 49 years.

Construction Begins On 1st Railway Station Of Sikkim At Rangpo

According to an article which was recently published by The Times Of India or TOI, this particular railway station is a part of the railway infrastructure project recently unveiled. The entire project will cost around ₹41,000 crores.

This railway route will connect Rangpo to Sevoke. This is the first phase of the project. In the second phase, Rangpo will be connected to Gangtok. Finally, Gangtok will be connected to Nathula. This will improve connectivity within the state and will boost tourism.

What is more, the design of the railway station will integrate local cultural motifs and elements so the station looks integrated into the local aesthetic. The total length of this railway line will be 45 kilometres long.

Foundation Stone Of The Station Laid Virtually By PM Modi

On February 26, Monday, the prime minister of the country, Narendra Modi, laid the foundation stone of the railway station virtually. The railway line will consist of a total of 22 bridges and 14 tunnels. Up until now, the people of Sikkim have had to rely only on road connectivity.

The railway station was originally scheduled to be completed by this year but owing to unforeseen natural calamities, the station will now be completed by 2025.
