The Story Behind Sethani Ka Dhaba, Jaipur

Under 140 Characters:

The infamous Sethani Ka Dhaba at Masala Chowk in Jaipur has a food legacy of 80 years.

The Story:

Today, we millennials who stay away from home miss the food our mothers make with so much heart. But in Masala Chowk, Jaipur, there is one woman who’s redefining comfort by preparing the humbly delicious roti and sabzi. Manju ji, the heroine of Sethani Ka Dhaba is known to bring the joys of homemade food to anyone who comes to her shop.

80 years ago, Manju Ji’s mother would get a kilo or two of plain flour and a stove from home. She’d park herself in Kishanpole Bazar and make fresh rotis to sell. Soon, this minuscule business gained pace and Manju Ji’s mum slowly introduced delectable dal and sabzi to go with her hot, fluffy rotis.

Fast-forward To Today…

Masala Chowk opened in 2018 with the aim to provide food shops to people who are popular for the food they make and its taste. This is done solely to support folks who don’t have the financial backing to buy their own food stalls.

The Jaipur Development Authority officers visited Manju ji’s stall to check on the food and the level of cleanliness. Having been very pleased to see the quality of food that Manju ji served, they were prompt to offer her a shop in Masala Chowk.

The Food:

Manju ji’s mother started selling her first rotis for 25 paise each. Today, you pay Rs 5 for a roti and within Rs 20 you can enjoy an entire meal. Manju ji not only brings you the flavors of home but also its warmth. Moreover, you get different varieties of rotis and vegetables to pick from. Potato, peas, onion are the most popular ones.

Manju ji’s wish…

It’s her wish to inspire women all over the country. To show them that nothing is impossible if you’re ready to work hard and not give up on your dreams. Manju ji’s family also helps her run her business and she’s truly a force to watch out for.
