India was known as an importer of French fries but now it has turned the tables in a decade. Gujarat which is Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi’s native state is the biggest exporter of French fries. The fact that Gujarat harvests only 7.42% of India’s total potato production is a huge surprise as it leads in exporting French fries.
Processing Plants In Gujarat
The processing plants of three companies namely McCain Foods, Iscon Balaji Foods and HyFun Foods are in Gujarat. Apart from being the country’s biggest exporters of frozen potato products, these companies also supply a large number to burger quick-serve restaurant chains. In India, a significant portion of the frozen potato market is driven by fast-food chains, including McDonald‘s, Wendy’s, Subway, KFC, Burger King, and Dominos. Frozen potatoes taste the same as the normal ones but have a greater shelf life.

About 30,000 metric tons of frozen potatoes were exported by India in 2019, and 95% of the total amount were fries. Nearly USD 1.10 billion was generated in 2020 by the frozen potato products market in India.
