Tungnath temple, situated in the Rudraprayag district, is tilting by 5-6 degrees and small structures by 10 degrees.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said that they have informed the central government about all the findings. They have also suggested that the Tungnath shrine in Dehradun be named a protected monument.

An official said that the government has started the process of declaring this shrine, known as the world’s highest Shiva temple, as a place of national importance. As a matter of procedure, it has also issued a notification seeking objections from the public. ASI will also find the root cause of this tilting and then look after its immediate repair.

Thorough Inspection Of The Shrine

The superintending archaeologist of ASI’s Dehradun circle said that they will first find the root cause behind this tilting and know if it can be repaired immediately. They will also conduct a thorough inspection of the Tungnath shrine and prepare a detailed work programme.

The officials have not yet ruled out the possibility of subsidence. They mentioned that after consulting the experts, if needed, they will also replace the damaged foundation stones of the temple. For now, they have attached five glass scales to the walls of the main temple in order to measure the movement.
