Water levels in the reservoirs near Coimbatore are dropping drastically. This has led to a water crisis in the area. The situation is so bad that the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has issued alerts that water will be supplied once in 15 days in several areas. They have asked people to use water judiciously and store it until the next supply.

Due to the hot summer season, the water levels in the three major reservoirs of Coimbatore – Pillur Dam, Siruvani Dam, and Aliyar Dam – are declining sharply. Also, due to poor rainfall last monsoon and no rainfall in the area this year, the water levels in these dams have gone further down. The situation in some areas is so bad that residents blocked roads with empty pots as they have not received a water supply in weeks!

The situation in Rajasthan’s Jaipur is quite severe as well. As temperatures touch the 40° C mark, the heatwave conditions are also worsening. According to a report, there is a shortage of water in the city as the demand for water tankers has gone up by 10%! It has been reported by the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) that the groundwater level in Jaipur has gone down.

This water demand will further increase as the maximum temperature in Jaipur will remain around 42°C next week, according to IMD. This has raised concerns amongst the residents of the city as the growing water demand has also raised the prices of water tankers significantly. It has been reported that a water tanker that used to cost around ₹800 in Jaipur, is now being sold at ₹1,000 and it can go further up, as per the locals.

While Coimbatore and Jaipur are already facing the heat of hot summer and dropping water levels in the city, there are chances of water crisis in Meghalaya this season too. The growing heatwave in the state, along with the reports of drying up of Mawphlang Dam has raised concerns of a looming water shortage in this North-Eastern state.

The severe heat waves and dry spell conditions in the state, along with the dearth of rainfall in April in Meghalaya have raised the looming concerns of a water crisis in the state. According to reports, East Khasi Hills has seen 20% less rainfall this April. Meanwhile, South Garo Hills and West Jaintia Hills districts recorded 87% below normal precipitation this year.

Also, according to the MET department, districts like Ri-Bhoi, West Khasi Hills, South Garo Hills, and North Garo Hills have observed 80% less rainfall this season. All these reports have worried the people about the upcoming water shortage in the region.
