In 2023, the city saw an exceptional increase in tourist numbers. This number includes 13,700 international tourists, according to data from the UP tourism department. According to Live Mint reports, this influx of tourists in Varanasi represents a sharp rise from the 54.8 lakh visitors in 2014. The tourism industry in Varanasi has experienced substantial growth, especially after the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor was completed. Due to the construction of new highways, airports, and opulent hotels that respect the city’s historical legacy, tourism-related revenue in the area has increased by 65%.

A notable example of Varanasi’s efforts to embrace modernity while honouring tradition is the transformation of the 200-year-old Dalmia Bhawan into the SABO Boutique Hotel. This luxury hotel aims to contribute to the city’s tourism sector by offering a unique experience for discerning travellers.

The building’s historical significance is highlighted by its connections to figures such as  Rabindranath Tagore, Sarojini Naidu, and more. According to Live Mint, Kunal Dalmia, the owner of Dalmia Bhawan, explained how the city continues to flourish with the rise of luxury and spiritual tourism. He attributes this growth to enhanced infrastructure, improved connectivity, and government initiatives such as the PRASAD scheme.

The Dalmia family is deeply committed to creating a lasting impact on Varanasi by transforming their 19th-century garden home into a modern hotel. The late LN Dalmia also gifted a 275-room hostel to Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in memory of his father, Duli Chandji Dalmia. The family also donated a Home Science block to BHU in memory of Savitri Devi Dalmia, named “Savitri Devi Dalmia Vigyan Bhawan.”

Varanasi continues to embrace its rich heritage while welcoming modern developments.
