100 Cities To Have Metro Networks By India’s 100th Year Of Independence

India is all set to take a revolutionary step. The government has announced that 100 cities in India will have metro networks by the country’s 100th year of independence. With metro networks already in the pipeline across several cities in the country by 2047, you can expect India’s metro connectivity to increase by 10 folds. Read on to know more.

India To Get Metro Lines In 100 Cities By 2047

In a report by Live Hindustan, Durga Shanker Mishra, the secretary of the Union housing and urban affairs ministry revealed that in the 100th year of India’s independence, 2047, metro trains will run in at least 100 cities. While the current length of the metro network stands at 500 km, it will increase 10 folds to 5000 km. He made this observation on the second day of the New India Urban Expo in Lucknow on October 6. India boasts of the 5th largest metro network in the world. with trains operating in major cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Bangalore etc.

Daily Ridership Across Networks To Increase To 10 Million Post Covid-19 Pandemic

Mishra revealed that pre-pandemic times, 8.5 million people travelled on metro trains daily. And at present only 3-3.5 million people commute on metros. According to a Hindustan Times report, the official also stated that post the Covid-19 pandemic, daily ridership across all networks will increase to 10 million. The official praised other metro-related modes of travel like Metro Neo, Water Metro and Metrolite, as they cost less than a Metro project.
