If you’ve tried to apply for a passport, you know that it is one of the most cumbersome processes. Especially when it comes to verification by the police. This part of the process can be especially nail-biting. Well, if you’re in Ahmedabad and you’re applying for a passport soon, we have good news for you! This nail-biting part of the process will soon be done away with!

That’s right! Passport applicants in Ahmedabad no longer have to visit police stations to verify their backgrounds. This new directive is aimed at making the application process more citizen-friendly. According to an article recently published by The Times Of India or TOI, this update was made in a circular issued by DGP law and order on November 22.

The primary objective of this directive is to streamline the process of passport application. Now, it will be the responsibility of the police to ensure that the applicants qualify for a passport. The circular asks the police should also refrain from summoning applicants to the police station or making rounds at their homes unless there is something in their application that warrants this move.

If there is no suspicious element in the applicant’s background, the verification process will have to be done remotely. This is widely considered a positive move because it will reduce hassle and the time taken to process applications. According to TOI’s sources, this move was prompted because the DGP received quite a lot of complaints of corruption.

There were also many cases where applications were rejected simply because they weren’t at home when the background check was made. These unnecessary hardships were brought to the DGP’s notice and hence, this move had to be taken. It is not known whether a similar move will also be applied in other parts of the country as well. Surely, however, the move will save a lot of time and hassle for applicants.
