Delhi Airport’s expanded Terminal 1 (T1) may be fully operational from April 16. Once this happens, Terminal 2 (T2) may be closed for repairs as early as the next day. This will affect the flight operations of IndiGo & SpiceJet flights operating from T2. Scroll on to know more about this.
Terminal 1 Of Delhi Airport To Start Full Operations Soon
According to the Times of India, Delhi Airport’s T1 is set to cater to its full capacity of 4 crore passengers annually from April 16. However, the final date is subject to clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). The expanded T1 was inaugurated last March. However, a canopy collapsed three months later during the monsoon, resulting in one casualty.
The expert panel, appointed by the government, highlighted that the incident was caused because of design issues, poor construction, and inadequate maintenance. After this, T1 was completely shut. Later, a portion of the terminal was reopened for a few flights. Now, with all the revamp, the expanded T1 of Delhi Airport is set to be fully operational.

IndiGo & SpiceJet Flights To Shift To The All-Domestic T1
As per reports, all IndiGo and SpiceJet flights, the two airlines operating from Delhi Airport’s T2, will be shifted to the all-domestic T1 once it opens. Also, the T2 apron will be shut down soon after as it needs to be “strengthened and spruced up”. As per the Times of India report, T2 is likely to reopen in August or September, after all the repair work is taken care of. Also, more domestic flights are likely to operate from T2 when it reopens.
It is to be noted that Air India Group and IndiGo are the Indian carriers with the maximum flights, both on the domestic and international front. These airlines have raised the issue of poor connectivity between the 8km-apart T1 and T3/2 of Delhi Airport. This hinders smooth transfers between flights.
