Bhutan Reopens Its Historic Trans Bhutan Trail, Expects Increase In Tourism

Bhutan has revived its historic Trans Bhutan Trail after more than half a century. This revival brings hopes of increased tourism within the country. It comes as a result of the vision of the current king, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk. The king wanted to revive the historical trail of the country since there is a rich history attached to it. This refurbishment and revival of the age-old method of transportation is expected to increase the country’s tourism.

The trail is spread across a total of 4,033 kilometres. This used to be the sole means of transportation across the country until 1962. After that, the first-ever national highway was built in the country.

After the construction of the national highway, the Trans Bhutan trail gradually started dilapidating due to disuse and neglect. Now, after almost 60 years, the Trans Bhutan Trail is now being revived.

This ancient mode of transportation is said to date all the way back to the 16th Century AD. The transportation was used by a plethora of people ranging from monks and traders to even rulers. The trail was also used by ‘Garps.’ Garps were old messengers whose sole purpose was to deliver political messages from across the land to the Dzongs.

The popularity of the now-refurbished trail is credited to the Trans Bhutan Trail organisation which is a social enterprise that is also non-profit. This organisation collaborates with local guides and farmers to curate an authentic Bhutanese experience for foreign tourists.

This experience provides a peek into the lives of the local farmers of rural Bhutan. Many farmers have thrown open their doors to tourists. They offer stays and authentic, homemade meals to tourists. Some tourists are even privy to the recipes of food and how exactly it is made.
