Chhath Puja is a four-day festival where devotees worship the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya. The festival is widely celebrated in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. One of the most important parts of this festival is thekua prasad. But what is the significance of this sweet offering? Scroll on to find out!

Why Is Thekua An Important Part Of Chhath Puja Celebration?

Chhath Puja celebrations have started and will continue till November 8. During these four days, devotees will pray for the well-being and health of their families and women even fast for 36 hours! During the festivities, lots of traditional dishes like chana ki ghugni, chawal ladoo, and kaddu bhat are prepared and offered to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya. However, thekua remains the most loved prasad during the Chhath Puja celebration.

This crispy, delicious, and flavourful prasad is an important part of the festival and symbolises devotion, purity, and the spirit of Chhath Puja. According to Times Now, the lines drawn on the thekua signify wheat, seasonal fruits, sugarcane, and other crops. It is made with whole wheat, jaggery, and ghee, has a long shelf life, and is distributed among family and friends during the festival.

Thekua Prasad Recipe To Try At Home

If you wish to make thekua prasad at home, then you can follow this easy recipe shared by News18.

Ingredients –

300 grams of gram flour
2 tablespoons of ghee
3 to 4 cups (150 grams) jaggery
½ cup (50 grams) grated coconut
Refined oil

Method –

1. Take ½ cup of water in a pan and add jaggery pieces to it. Let it boil.
2. Keep stirring till jaggery dissolves completely. Sieve it and set it aside to cool down and add ghee to it.
3. In a large bowl, mix some flour, grated coconut and powdered cardamom.
4. To make the dough, gradually pour in the jaggery mixture and knead it till you get a slightly dry consistency.
5. Take small pieces, mould them in a disk-like shape, and add the desired design on top.
6. Now, heat oil in a kadai and deep fry the thekua until golden brown.

And that’s it! Your Thekua prasad is ready to be served and enjoyed.
