It was just a couple of weeks ago when the news broke out several concerning side effects of Covishield. It led to major chaos as crores of recipients got scared about its rare side effects. And now, a similar controversy arises regarding another vaccine taken by a huge section of the Indian population, Covaxin. A new study claimed that the recipients of Covaxin have suffered from side effects as well.
Covaxin Comes Under The Spotlight Leading To People Fearing Adverse Effects
It has been a long time since we took a vaccine for COVID-19. However, now a study in Drug Safety stated that about a third of recipients of Covaxin, among the people who participated in the survey, reported adverse events of special interest, according to The Times of India report. They have suffered from some issues and side effects within a year of getting jabbed with Bharat Biotech’s vaccine, the study published by Springer International revealed.
The observational study specified that participants suffered from adverse events of special interest such as:
- 5 per cent of women recipients of Covaxin faced issues concerning menstrual abnormalities
- musculoskeletal disorders
- upper respiratory tract infection
- skin and subcutaneous disorders
A team of researchers including Dr. Sankha Shubhra Chakrabarti worked on this study at Banaras Hindu University, according to a report by First Post. They contacted 926 people who took Covaxin jabs. The duration of conducting this research was between January 2022 and August 2023. According to a report by Daily Pioneer, 635 of these participants were adolescents and the rest of 291 were adults. The researchers focused on identifying any adverse events of special interest after a year of getting jabbed.
How Many People Suffered From Side Effects?
Following the interview of each participant, the study revealed some interesting information.
- 48 per cent of adolescents (304) and 43 per cent of adults (124) suffered from viral upper respiratory tract infections in this specified timeline.
- 10.5 per cent of Covaxin recipients faced issues concerning new-onset skin and subcutaneous disorders.
- 10.2 per cent experienced general disorders.
- Nervous system disorders were reported in 4.7 per cent.
- There have been a set of health issues suffered by different people. Among everyone, the report claimed that adolescent girls faced the most issues.
