Germany Declares Hangover As An Illness And You Can Take A Sick Leave

Do you remember the morning after a hard night of partying? If it were up to us we would try to conveniently skip it entirely. The struggle of waking up with a splitting headache and the will to die along with a lot of regrets is synonymous with a hangover. And it is an experience that we all know of far too well. The day after a night of over-drinking is akin to being sick which is why partying on a weekend is still fine. But what about the time when you go drinking on a work night? Don’t lie, you have thought about calling in sick to work too. But how do you explain that to your boss? You can’t possibly show him/her the videos of you chugging down pitchers of beers like a champ. Well, you can’t but the Germans can.

Germans Can Take A Sick Day For Being Hungover

We aren’t joking. A German court has declared that hangovers are an illness and that it is illegal to sell hangover-cures. Any sort of food or drink supplements that help in treating hangovers is advertising falsely according to the court. The superior regional court said, “Information about a food product cannot ascribe any properties for preventing, treating or healing a human illness or give the impression of such a property,” The country is known to have a very active interest in beer. So much, in fact, that each German drinks about 101.2 litres on a yearly basis. That is only 53 litres than the amount of water that they consume on a yearly basis. The ruling came after the revelry of Oktoberfest. Celebrated annually in Munich (and now all over the world), Oktoberfest is a folk festival where large quantities of beer are consumed.

Since a hangover qualifies as an illness, Germans can actually call in sick at work and spend the day recuperating from a hard night. Needless to say, we are pretty envious.
