The hospitality sector in India has seen a sharp decline during the pandemic. Concerns about the industry’s employment numbers were also high. But now, it seems like the sector has made a complete comeback. Since the pandemic, travel agent jobs in India reportedly saw a 66% rise, leading to the demand for job roles in the past year.

As per a report by Skift, job postings for the hospitality sector witnessed a 66% rise from June 2022 to June 2023. This was as per the data provided by the global job site Indeed, stated the report. The report also noted the significant turnaround from big declines during the pandemic. As per the data, the most in-demand job roles were the positions of travel agents. They led the race for most job openings, in the past year, stated Skift’s report.

The report also mentioned that apart from compensation, the travel agent industry also offers performance-based travel discounts and commissions. 

But, wait, curious to know which Indian cities had the most demand. We’ll tell you. The report stated that Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi topped the list for the most demand. Apart from these three major cities, two more Indian cities saw a rise.

The report stated that Tier 2 cities like Coimbatore and Mohali are also on the rise with 4% each. As per a report by The Economics Times, Delhi led the race with a 19% rise, followed by Mumbai which saw a 9% rise, and Bengaluru with a 5.29%.

How Well Did India’s Tourism Sector Recover?

Sashi Kumar, head of sales at Indeed India, in his statement reported by Skift, said that travellers are actively looking for budget-friendly experiences which increases the demand for travel consultants. The requirement for travel consultants who can curate a safe, time-intensive and cost-effective experience also increases, he stated, as per the report. 

As per Skift’s reports, previous figures in the sector indicated a 60% rise in job postings from March 2022 to March 2023. The city to emerge as the top city for such jobs was reportedly Delhi, the National capital region.

Skift’s report also mentioned how India’s tourism sector earned $67 billion in foreign exchange between 2019 and May 2023, as per the latest government data. The report mentioned that for perspective, India had gained a total of $25.6 billion in foreign exchange from tourism in 2019 alone.

As per the report, close to 30 cities from across 15 states are also being shortlisted to be developed as sustainable destinations. This will reportedly happen under the Ministry of Tourism’s Swadesh Darshan 2.0 program, stated Skift. The program was launched in January 2023.
