Do you often travel by e-rickshaw in Delhi? Then this is for you. The Delhi government is planning new rules for e-rickshaws to manage traffic and improve safety. From limiting the number of passengers to prohibiting people from sitting beside the driver, here are the proposed rules and everything you need to know.
Delhi Plans New E-Rickshaw Rules
You may have seen people crammed into an e-rickshaw in Delhi, as drivers squeeze in extra passengers to earn more from a single trip. But it seems like this could change soon. According to News18, the Delhi government is planning to tighten the rules for these vehicles to prevent overcrowding and ensure everyone’s safety.
Under the proposed rules, an e-rickshaw can carry no more than four passengers, apart from the driver. Plus, the proposal also prohibits passengers from sitting beside the driver or travelling while standing, which is a common sight in the city. Delhi Traffic Police recorded 10,499 cases of passengers travelling while sitting beside the driver between January 1 and September 15, 2025. This practice is undoubtedly risky.

Rules Also Focus On Women’s Safety And Speed Limits
According to News18, the new proposal also addresses drivers’ conduct, women’s safety, vehicle maintenance, ownership rights and battery standards. These safety rules are important, as Delhi Traffic Police also recorded 108 road accidents involving e-rickshaws between January 1 and September 15, 2025. These incidents left many people injured and 25 people dead.
The permitted luggage limit is 40 kg, and the vehicle’s maximum speed should not exceed 25 kmph. Its motor power must also be limited to 2,000 watts. Drivers are prohibited from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and must maintain appropriate behaviour towards women. In cases of eve-teasing involving women passengers, drivers should alert the police immediately. The number of e-rickshaws is also capped at 2.5 lakh in Delhi after the compliance window closes.
E-rickshaws are considered an important part of Delhi’s transport network. They offer easy, affordable connectivity between metro stations, residential areas, markets and other destinations.
