A mysterious well in Virparda village of Morbi taluka in Gujarat is going viral. The water inside has been moving on its own since the afternoon of August 6, 2026. According to News18, the moving waves were reported two days earlier and were observed again on August 6. The strange phenomenon has attracted a large number of villagers, who gathered near the well to watch the unusual movement of water. The water was also reportedly spilling over the edge. A video showing the water moving in the well was uploaded by X user Neetu Khandelwal.
Many people initially believed that it was happening due to an earthquake, but no seismic activity has been reported by authorities so far. Many people also thought that the well might be haunted. According to News18, the District Collector has ordered a detailed report from the groundwater research team. The preliminary assessment suggests that the water movement is likely caused by air trapped beneath the water. As the trapped air shifts, the water starts moving, which may make it look like the water is moving on its own. However, the Gujarat Groundwater Research Institute has been asked to submit a detailed study along with a report.
Many users on social media came forward with their own theories behind the unusual phenomenon. One user wrote, “I am from Morbi. The well owner connected a pipeline from the road drainage to the recharge well, so trapped air and water flow are the main reasons.” Another user commented, “When water in a closed space, like a well, lake, or pool, starts swinging back and forth on its own, scientists call it a seiche. When it happens inside a narrow hole like this, it is called a well seiche.”
Some users also made funny comments like, “This well seems to be quite unwell,” and “I am waiting for a giant monster to come out of it.”
