Mumbai: Amid Monsoon Delay, BMC Tightens Water Use Rules; What Are The Rules? When Will It Rain?

This year, rainfall has been delayed in many cities, leading to water shortages. One such city facing the issue is Mumbai, where water levels in key reservoirs continue to drop. Read to know!

How Is Mumbai Dealing With Water Shortage?

Monsoon has been delayed in Mumbai, resulting in a water shortage. Amid this, to save the remaining water supply, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to tighten water rules across the city. As per The Indian Express, right now, the city is already facing a 10% water cut in many places. But as the monsoon is delayed and the dry spell continues, the situation is getting worse.

From Wednesday, June 17, the BMC will stop water supply to construction sites and swimming pools. It will also increase the water cut to 20% for commercial, industrial, and sports establishments. Along with this, no new water connections will be approved for upcoming construction projects. For those misusing drinking water, officials have also warned that strict action will be taken.

What Is The Current Water Stock In Mumbai Lakes?

In the review meeting held on June 16, senior officials assessed the water stock in Mumbai’s lakes. The city currently depends on seven lakes, Tulsi, Vihar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna, Bhatsa, and Modak Sagar, for its water supply. Together, these lakes provide around 4,000 million litres of water per day to Mumbai.

The total water stock in Mumbai’s lakes has fallen to 1.49 lakh million litres, which is just 10.35% of their full capacity. Officials said that the water level has dropped quickly and this decline is faster compared to previous years.

To manage the water crisis, the BMC has given instructions to big organisations and institutions. It has asked them to use borewell or tanker water for non-drinking work like cleaning and gardening. In addition, water supply to packaged drinking water bottling plants has been stopped for some time to reduce pressure on the drinking water supply.

India Today reported that the weather department has said that the monsoon may reach Mumbai later than usual. This year, rain will arrive around June 25. Private weather experts also believe it could be delayed further
