Seems like nature has its own way of celebrating Diwali, and it is nothing short of beautiful. On the occasion of Dhanteras, Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla shared a video from the International Space Station that quickly went viral. While living on the ISS, Shubhanshu looked down at Earth and saw bright flashes of lightning across the clouds.
These flashes looked quite similar to the fireworks in the sky, which people often light on the ground during the Diwali festival. Shubhanshu called these flashes “Nature’s very own fireworks” and wrote that they are a beautiful reminder that the universe has its own way of celebrating light. And we couldn’t agree more.

Diwali Holds A Special Place In His Heart
Shubhanshu Shukla also wrote that Diwali has always held a special place in his heart and is one of his favourite festivals. This is why he decided to share these visuals during the ongoing festive season, as he couldn’t think of a more “fitting day to share it”. He also wrote, “There is something about the magic of lights, the sparkle and the fireworks that fills me with a sense of wonder and joy.”
Lightning flashes are massive bolts of electricity that happen during thunderstorms. And yes, they are visible from space, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station see them frequently. Shubhanshu Shukla, who made history as the first Indian to visit the ISS, keeps sharing interesting facts and stories from his mission on Instagram. Just a while ago, he also shared how he made mango salad in space using just a few ingredients.
