India’s First War Memorial For Animals Who Died In The Line Of Fire To Come Up In Meerut!

Did you know that the Army has more than 1,000 dogs? About 5,000 mules and 1,500 horses work in the Armed Forces too. These magnificent creatures help keep us safe and make the challenging lives of our homo-sapien soldiers a little easier. They lay out their lives when the time comes and face grave dangers head on with bravery. Our feline friends might have puppy dog eyes but, when it comes to the nation’s security, ferocity takes over. It’s about time they get their own memorial. So, India is getting its first war memorial for animals in Meerut! Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Centre and College in Meerut has been chosen to immortalise our cutest heroes.

What Is It

It has been reported that the Defense Ministry will give its approval soon for the new war memorial. Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Centre and College in Meerut is where the Army breeds, rears and trains dogs, mules and horses. The preliminary design has also been formed according to reports. Granite tables with the names and service numbers of more than 300 dogs. What makes this war memorial unique is that it’s not just for dogs but also mules and horses. These animals lost their lives in the Kargil war and counter-insurgency operations. The memorials will also carry names of 350 handlers.

What’s More

The war memorial for animals will pay homage to intelligent creatures that get the job done. Highly dangerous tasks like explosive detection and mine detection are performed by these trained service animals. Without them, efficiency and security would surely take a hit. Rescue operations and tracking also require animals to take over. Trustworthy companions help in guarding and attacking. Mules are sometimes the only way to deliver supplies in harsh terrains and extreme weather conditions. Horses and mules can reach places that vehicles can’t. Animal transport units reach remote locations up to 19,000 feet above sea level. Labradors, German Shepherds and Belgian Shepherds make up our canine force. Mudhol Hounds and Cocker Spaniels have recently been introduced on a trial basis for explosives detection. A war memorial for animals will remind us the cost of our border security. A tribute to those who lost their lives in service might also remind us to care for those who are still with us.
