J&K’s ‘Mini Switzerland’, Baisaran Valley, Closed Since April, Likely To Reopen After Amarnath Yatra Ends

J&K’s ‘Mini Switzerland’, Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam, is likely to reopen to the public after the conclusion of the Amarnath Yatra on August 9. The valley, known for its breathtaking views, was closed after the April 22 terror attack. However, it will undergo a strict security review before reopening. Here’s more on it.

Baisaran Valley May Reopen After Amarnath Yatra Ends

Baisaran Valley, often called the ‘Mini Switzerland of India’, is a beautiful hilltop nestled in the Himalayas. It lies around 5 km from Pahalgam in the Anantnag district of Kashmir. A famous tourist spot known for its dense pine forests and snow-capped mountains, it was closed after the April 22 terror attack. As per a report by The New Indian Express, the valley is likely to reopen after a strict security review following the conclusion of the Amarnath Yatra on August 9. The Lt. Governor of J&K had also ordered the reopening of other tourist spots, including Betab Valley and parks in Pahalgam market, from June 17.

The annual 38-day Amarnath Yatra, which is also proceeding under tight security, will end on August 9. Involving a trek to the Amarnath cave shrine, the yatra began on July 3. The journey follows two main routes: the traditional Pahalgam route and the shorter Baltal route. Authorities have deployed multi-layered security along both routes following the attacks.

Valley Set To Reopen Under Tight Security Measures

As per a report by TNIE, the reopening of Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley will follow a green signal from security agencies. Security in and around the valley, which is surrounded by lush forests, will be strengthened with not only personnel but also round-the-clock surveillance using drones, UAVs and other equipment. It should be noted that Baisaran Valley had no security when the terror attack took place on April 22. Authorities had immediately closed the tourist spot to carry out a security audit. Furthermore, 48 other tourist destinations in the valley were also closed. However, authorities reopened 8 of them after the audit.

The terror attack in Pahalgam severely impacted Kashmir’s tourism sector. Many tourists immediately departed, and others cancelled their bookings, leaving the industry at a major loss. With the valley now set to reopen under tight security measures, officials expect the flow of tourists to increase after the Amarnath Yatra ends.
