Whenever it’s Summer, people most likely visit beaches or take trips to the snowcapped mountains. But India is home to rare and beautiful marine wildlife and is one of the best things to explore in summer. We often tend to forget that. So here is a list of 5 Marine National Parks in India that can be your next summer trip destination this year.

1. Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary

Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary is the only Marine Sanctuary of Orissa. A part of Bhitarkanika National Park, Gahirmatha also makes for the only nesting spot for the Olive Ridley turtle. One of the most unique Marine National Parks in India, the sanctuary has a wide variety of flora and fauna. The Gahirmatha Beach which divides the Bhitarkanika mangroves from the Bay of Bengal is also one of the popular tourist attractions of this sanctuary. Also, here’s a travel tip. If you want to photograph cute little olive turtles, plan your visits from October till May.

2. Marine National Park

Located in Gujarat, the origin of Marine National Park dates back to the 1980s. This 163sqkm of less explored underwater life is one of the most beautiful Narine National parks in India. The Park has a diverse range of marine habitats meant to support almost 52 species of corals and different kinds of mangroves. Painted storks, Black-necked ibis, etc make for some of the best tourist attractions of the Marine National Park. Also, if you are lucky, you will spot happy little dolphins and green sea turtles here. Going snorkeling is advised when the tide is low. This might be your chance at spotting sea anemones, colorful sponges, crustaceans, etc.

3. Malvan Marine Wildlife Sanctuary

It’s not a hidden fact that Malvan is the richest biological coastal region in Maharashtra. So do not be surprised to find one of the most famous Marine National Parks in India here. Established in 1987, Malvan Marine Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over an area of 29.22sqkms. This one is a must-visit for you in Summer as it is home to some of the richest coastal species that are unique to the Konkan region. The park is also perfect for bird watching during your summer vacations. We recommend you explore Malvan via boat. And if it’s your lucky day, you might get a chance to get playful with the dolphins here.

4. Rani Jhansi Marine National Park

Covering an area of around 256sqkms, this is one of the most popular Marine National Parks in India. Rani was established in 1996 and is located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The marine park is famous for its unique blend of flora and fauna. Coral reefs, lowland evergreen rain forests, etc form the natural habitat of this Park. Your curious soul will surely be satisfied here. The park is also well protected from poaching, hunting, etc, and is a safe abode for the marine life residing here.

5. Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is at a 30 km distance from Port Blair and spreads over an area of around 281.5sqkms. White sandy beaches, a wide array of vegetation, and small water bodies adorn this marine park. This is one of the rare Marine National Parks of India where you will find corals. The Jolly Buoy and the Red Skin islands of this Park are the most popular among tourists. So this summer, do not stop yourself from exploring some rare underwater life here.
