Mumbai: Western Railway Workers Get Emotional Well-Being Sessions

Mental health is integral to a holistic life and people, even in India, are finally waking up to its importance. One of the major reasons for mental health problems is a person’s work environment and stress. With this issue in view, the employees of Western Railway recently received emotional well-being sessions. The response for the session was overwhelmingly positive if reports are to go by. The event was conducted by Project Mumbai.

According to an article which was recently written by The Times Of India or TOI, the event took place on Sunday, May 5. The project was by a non-governmental organisation or NGO called Project Mumbai in association with the DRM or Divisional Railway Manager of the Western Railway.

The session was called Manaswin and witnessed the participation of as many as 60 motormen. It addressed important issues such as stress reduction, coping mechanisms, how to have work-life balance and much more.

It may not be immediately apparent but these unsung heroes go through tremendous pressure every day. Since their entire job is predicated on punctuality, the stress can be hard to manage. Citing an example of the same, the CEO of Project Mumbai cited the numerous videos of motormen being beaten by angry mobs because the trains were a few minutes late.

Trauma was one of the major concerns discussed in the sessions. Many motormen have trauma and feel guilty when they witness suicide on railway tracks. The session discussed a number of coping mechanisms as well that they can use to manage their mental health better.

The response, as per the TOI article was overwhelmingly positive. It is important also to keep conducting these sessions and providing institutional support for therapy and other assistance to the employees as well.

Providing such assistance will not only improve their lives but will also help them perform better at work.
