Pilot Spilled Coffee In The Cockpit, Resulted In Emergency Landing

A pilot spilt coffee on the audio control panel of the plane flying over the Atlantic Ocean which was carrying 326 passengers on board. This incident caused a communication difficult for the pilots of the flight and had to make an emergency landing at Shannon airport in Ireland.

The spillage of hot coffee led to the audio panel giving out a smoky and burning smell. The incident occurred on the 6th of February 2019 on Airbus A330 flying from Frankfurt to Cancun. Fortunately, the passengers or the crew members did not bear any injuries from the mishap.

As the radio connection was lost due to the audio panel being affected, the captain took a call to turn the flight to the airport in Ireland. Air Accidents Investigation Branch looked into the incident and put out a report with all the above-mentioned information. The report also found that the pilot put his coffee cup on a tray in the cockpit near the audio panels where objects are vulnerable of being knocked out, with inputs from The Guardian.

The AAIB reports also say that the small size of cups is usually discouraged and the airline has responded to the incident making sure that all the cups with liquid will have a lid and that the crew and pilots will be more careful with the cup size that are appropriate for the cup holder.

A spokeswoman for Condor Airline said that the flight was diverted as a precautionary measure to the minor amount of smoke caused due to the spillage.
