Pune: Chandni Chowk Flyover’s Portion Caves In, Officials Fill Tar; Inaugurated Two Months Ago

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Chandni Chowk Flyover on the Pune-Bengaluru highway in August. Just two months into the inauguration, locals found out that a portion of the flyover had caved in. The locals were on a morning stroll when they saw a portion of the flyover that connects NDA to Bavdhan and immediately alerted the authorities. The officials investigated and filled the gaps with tar as a temporary solution.

Pune: Chandni Chowk Flyover’s Portion Caves In

When Uday Dani and his friend went for their morning stroll on the Chandni Chowk flyover on Wednesday, they noticed that a section of it had collapsed. They alerted authorities and stationed themselves as guards to avoid any mishaps.

Since its August opening, this road has experienced structural problems. Although the hole has been temporarily sealed, Dani told TOI that it raises concerns about the caliber of the work. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the flyover’s construction company, and NCC representatives were on the scene to look at the matter.

According to the officials, the entire flyover section Deo installed lacks expansion joints. Despite spending so much on the project, the flyover’s poor condition has angered the locals.

Manish Deo, a member of the Bavdhan Citizens Forum (BCF) who was present at the location, stated that the officials had mentioned that the lack of expansion joints on this bridge could have caused a piece to collapse.  (As per The Times of India)

Was The Inauguration Appropriate?

The authorities were looking into what caused the cave-in. They announced that the expansion joints they had ordered would be arriving in a week. It looked like an unsettling scenario. He said that the situation needs to be taken seriously by the authorities.

Deo questioned whether it was appropriate to allow vehicles to use the road before finishing all the aspects of the project. He also mentioned that now they will have to check whether the flyover went through an audit or quality check or not.

For the time being, the officials have filled the area with tar, which is only a temporary measure. BCF director Dushyant Bhatia questioned that after spending over over 800 crore, is this what they get after two months of its inauguration?

Although it appears like the road caved in only partially, it betrays the confidence of the locals. Bhatia believes that the project as a whole requires a thorough audit conducted by an outside organization. Bhatia suggested that the contractor be penalized by the authorities. Expansion Joints Are Important

Speaking under the condition of anonymity, a senior NHAI official stated that they quickly completed a patch job and will shortly finish the expansion joints.

Concrete expansion joints are essential to preventing cracks. Concrete shrinks and dries after it is poured. Then, depending on the temperature outside, it can expand. According to the authority, the expansion joints aid in maintaining the concrete’s position.
