Most of us have heard the term ‘Sab Bhagwan Bharose’ (Everything is up to God) but did you know, there is a quaint village in Maharashtra that has been taking these words literally? Situated in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, Shani Shingnapur is the holy site of the famous Lord Shani’s 5 feet tall idol that is said to protect the entire village.

 History Behind Shani Shingnapur

Legend has it that 3oo years ago, after a heavy flood, the villagers found a giant slab of black rock. When it was poked, it is been said that blood oozed out. Later that night, the village headman had a dream where Lord Shani ordered him to make a shrine in his name in this village and in return, he will protect the village from any harm. The lord had only one condition: the shrine shall not have a roof so He can guard the village unhindered.

Since then, the villagers believing that the Lord will protect them against thieves and any misfortunes, have removed all locks from their houses. The locals, however, occasionally lean wooden panels against their front doors to keep out stray animals but have been known to leave their money and jewellery unsecured. Even the village toilets do not have a door but just a sheet to maintain privacy. Such is the paramount belief on Lord Shani to protect each villager from harm.

What’s Happening Now?

The lore surrounding this village has reached unprecedented heights as Shani Shingnapur receives an overflow of devotees eagerly awaiting the blessings of Lord Shani. However even in popularity, the village has remained true on their myth and has not installed any locks anywhere.

Even in recent times, the police station which opened in 2015, has not received any single complaint from the villagers and has followed the protocol of the village and has not installed any locks or front door. Also, the United Commercial Bank opened its first ‘lockless’ branch in Shani Shingnapur, installing a glass entrance in the spirit of transparency and a small remote-controlled electromagnetic lock in respect of the village and their beliefs. However, this village too has its fair share of sceptics. Some have argued that their belongings worth thousands have been stolen and there was no redemption as the villagers believed. However, the villagers argue that the theft has happened beyond the boundary of the village and hence has no consequences. Whatever the truth, some villagers now are seeking permission from the gram panchayat to install locks for their family’s safety. What Do We Think?

Times are changing and this means that while the younger generation will move out of the traditional confines, the older generation will cling on to their stories and beliefs even more. Whichever road the uncertain future holds for this village, we hope Lord Shani continues to guard and protect everyone in Shani Shingnapur.
