To avoid long queues in the alcohol shops, the Jharkhand Government had asked Zomato and Swiggy to begin alcohol delivery services in some of the major cities of the state. Now, these food delivery start-ups have confirmed to start doorstep delivery of alcohol. Swiggy has launched a new wine shops category, which is already live in Ranchi. The delivery companies might soon introduce the services in eight other cities of the state.
How Is It Happening?
Swiggy is taking the alcohol orders from its customers only after their age and identity verifications. While placing an order through Swiggy, one needs to upload the picture of a valid government ID, along with a selfie. Apart from that, every order will have an OTP, which the buyer needs to provide at the time of delivery. The company has taken these steps to limit the quantities being ordered and also to prevent underage drinking. Zomato too has notified that it will start its liquor delivery services soon in Jharkhand.

What Else?
After the extension of lockdown till 30th May 2020, the Jharkhand government has allowed the opening of most shops outside the containment zones that sell hardware items, books and stationery, construction related items, liquor and more. As per reports, selling of alcohol through food delivery apps in a safe and responsible way will not only generate additional profits for the liquor outlets but also solve the problem of overcrowding. In several places, like Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Delhi, people gathered in large numbers outside the liquor shops as soon as they were opened up. Many of them did not even adhere to the norms of social distancing, increasing the chances of the spread of COVID-19.
