Have you ever had one of those moments while watching a movie that you have seen a particular location or place somewhere before? Well, we recently discovered one such location that we didn’t realise we had seen before when we first saw the movie. It turns out that the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ and cult classic ‘Before Sunrise’ both were shot at the same cafe in Austria – Café Sperl. An X (formerly Twitter) user shared this little titbit on her post and we were definitely not expecting this one.

@TheCinesthetic, a page dedicated to movie buffs on X (formerly Twitter), asked its followers their favourite movie that was shot in the city they were born in. Responding to this tweet, @redroIa shared pictures of ‘Before Sunrise’ and ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’. While we knew that both movies were shot in Vienna (or at least a part of it), what we didn’t realise is that they were both shot in Café Sperl of Vienna.
The X user shared images of scenes from both the movies that were shot in the cafe. And just like many others, we never realised the connection between these movies. The iconic fake telephone scene from ‘Before Sunrise’ where Celine and Jesse are engaged in a deep-hearted conversation was filmed in Café Sperl. This legendary confession scene is engraved in the hearts of the fans of this movie. However, we never made the connection of this cafe being the same one where Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan were seen interacting in the ‘Bulleya’ song. Why Is Café Sperl In Austria So Famous?
Café Sperl is a traditional Viennese coffee house in Austria that opened in 1880! This coffee house is so popular and old that it is even registered as a historic place in the Austrian Register. The cafe has won many awards like the “Austrian Cafe of the Year” and “Goldene Kaffeebohne”.
Besides ‘Before Sunrise’ and ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’, the cafe even featured the movie ‘A Dangerous Method’ and the miniseries ‘The Winds of War’.
