After Virtual Weddings, Now Graduation Ceremonies To Be Held Online

With coronavirus bringing our lives to a standstill, the digital world has become the new normal. From engagements and marriages to concerts and even tours, everything is being made virtual now to facilitate social distancing and combat the spread of the virus. And now graduation ceremonies are also turning online.

How Is It Happening?

Think of a graduation year with no convocation, no parties, no gigs and no handoffs of diplomas. Sounds sad, isn’t it? But then, the students graduating at the time of the pandemic do not have an option either. They can’t gather now for any ceremony. But successes deserve to be celebrated. Therefore, Facebook has decided to honour the class of 2020 in the US with some brand new features.

Coming May 15th, Facebook and Instagram will conduct a virtual graduation ceremony with a commencement address given by the American media executive Oprah Winfrey. This will be followed by words of wisdom by Jennifer Garner, Simone Biles, Awkwafina, Lil Nas X and others. And then guess what, singer Miley Cyrus will take up the virtual stage with her hit song, ‘The Climb’, as informed by Marne Levine, the chief operating officer of Instagram.

What Else?

The celebration will reckon the high schools and colleges in the US by name and state, and will also incorporate photos and videos of the class of 2020. Apart from that, there will be words from the deans and principals as well. Also, graduates will be able to host their personal online graduation parties through Facebook, with oodles of features like a virtual graduation hub, messenger rooms, custom filters and much more. Features coming up on Instagram for the ceremony include a graduation countdown sticker, new AR effects and a dedicated page with the hashtag #Graduation2020. That’s not all. There will be special graduation themes for Facebook and Instagram stories and a list of graduation songs too. On May 11th, Instagram will start spotlighting noteworthy senior experiences as well.
