The name dandanmian itself is quite telling of its history and origin. Mian means noodles and you’ll often see it used in names of other noodle dishes like Biang Biang Mian or Zha Jhang Mian. Dandan is a type of wooden pole or bamboo. People used the bamboo to carry things along with them. How is it connected to the history, you ask? Well, we’ll tell you.

History Of Dan Dan Noodles

The dish originated as a street food in the Sichuan province of China. There, it was sold by hawkers carrying their wares on a dandan in which they stored the ingredients of the noodles. According to the official Michelin website, it is believed that the creator of the dish was Chen Baobao who invented the style around 1841

Legend has it that he was inspired by the roadside hawkers who sold food and wanted to do the same. He was good at making noodles so he decided that he would sell them. He started carrying all the ingredients he needed on a stick and sold it to passersby. Et Voila! A new culinary legacy was born! Compared to dishes like Chow Mein, it is not as popular.

However, it is bursting with flavours and spice. It can be made as a dry noodle dish or a soupy noodle dish.
