Driving Tests In The UAE Get A ‘Smart’ Makeover

Driving test in the UAE just got a smart makeover! The RTA has now introduced fully automated test, making it easier to spot errors. Going forward, yard tests or parking tests will be automated. This means smart vehicles will be installed with cameras and sensors which will track the examinee’s performance.

What’s It?

Driving test in the UAE has three stages- theory, yard and road test. Now, yard or parking tests will be completely monitored using automated sensors installed in the smart vehicle. The new initiative will help the RTA make more informed decisions and also spot errors more effectively.

There tests will have four cameras fitted outside the vehicle to access the driver, and one inside to verify his/her identity.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said “”It reduces the error margin in taking the ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ decision … It also improves safety, thanks to the use of technology to avoid accidents,” said Khaled Alsalehi, director of drivers training and qualification department”.

Currently, the system is applied to 15 testing yards in Dubai, and 108,603 smart test processed have been successfully completed.

What Else?

Meanwhile, the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police have unveiled smart vehicles to access the driving skills of a person.

The ‘smart’ vehicles use artificial intelligence to evaluate the performance of the driver. To start off with, the project will be implemented in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra. A total of 32 smart vehicles, including 19 automatic, 13 manual vehicles, and 28 buses will be used for the test.

The vehicles will be connected to the control room through an advanced communication network. Test results will then be recorded directly in the traffic file.
