The Fisheries Department of Himachal Pradesh has announced a ban on trout fishing in the state for the next four months. Effective November 1, 2024, this ban will help promote the breeding of trout fish during the winter season in the state. Read on to know more about this ban.

Himachal Pradesh Bans Trout Fishing For 4 Months

Himachal Pradesh’s Fisheries Department announced a complete ban on trout fishing till February 28, 2025 on Friday. According to India Today, the ban aims to promote the breeding of the famous fish in the state. That’s why, the authorities imposed a four-month ban on trout fishing in major rivers and their tributaries spread over 600 km in Himachal Pradesh.

This means, that there will be no trout fishing in the Pabbar River in the Shimla district, Beas, Sarvari, Parvati, Gadsa, and Sainj Rivers in the Kullu district, Uhl River in the Mandi and Kangra districts, and Bhandal Nala in Chamba district, the Fisheries Department announced in a statement.

How Will This Ban Help?

Trout fish are very famous in Himachal Pradesh. So, what prompted this ban? According to Vivek Chandekl, Director Fisheries Department Himachal Pradesh, banning trout fishing will help “promote the breeding of the fish in the cold-water regions of Himachal Pradesh and to conserve natural resources” in the state. The cold winter season is the natural breeding season for trout fish in Himachal Pradesh. Banning the activity will help the fish breed freely and allow natural seed collection in reservoirs.

According to India Today, the ban will ensure the preservation of Himachal Pradesh’s fishery resources in the long run. It will also boost fish production in the state. Vivek Chandekl further told India Today that the state’s Fisheries Department has made special arrangements to ensure the safety of trout waters. They have put forth a monitoring team to patrol the water areas.
