I Visited Kashmir And Finally Understood Why It Is Called The Switzerland Of India

Agar Firdaus bar rōy-e zamin ast, hamin ast-o hamin ast-o hamin ast.

Translated in English, this couplet by the Persian-language poet Amir Khusrau means “If there is a paradise on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here”. He uttered this in awe of the stunning Kashmir valley. And when I went there in November, this very sentiment was evoked in my heart as well. Such is the splendour of this heaven on earth. Kashmir is the most picturesque valley in India and you need to visit it at least once in your life.

I was mesmerised to witness the timeless beauty of Kashmir which comprises scenic drives through green meadows, the photogenic highland mountains, the serene lakes, and so much more. To make it a perfect escapade from the urban chaos, I also spent my time in the valley sipping on the kahwa chai, relishing authentic Kashmiri food, and interacting with the locals.

Let’s dive deep into the indescribable beauty of Kashmir! Here are the highlights of my trip:

Undoubtedly, this place is touched by nature’s splendid hand! Nestled in the Pir Panjal Range, Gulmarg is the epitome of heaven and bliss. It is a magnificent tourist destination in Kashmir and loved by everyone, especially those who love snow adventure sports. One of the best skiing destinations in India, you should definitely try this if you are willing to have a unique experience. And if you are visiting in any other season, then you will be offered gorgeous views of lofty mountains, lovely lakes, lush greenery, and a wonderful variety of flowers.

A jewel in the crown of Kashmir, this serene lake has a shoreline of around 15.5 kilometres. It is encompassed by a boulevard lined with Mughal-era gardens, parks, houseboats, and hotels. Taking a ride in a colourful shikara is a must-do here. Cruise off the lake to see the floating market and buy popular souvenirs like fridge magnets, keyrings, jewellery, stoles, suits, woollens, etc. Don’t miss the popular floating vegetable and flower market. Treat your eyes to mesmerising vistas of high-rolling hills, snow-capped mountains, and shikaras sailing quietly. Staying in a houseboat on Dal Lake is a must for an enhanced experience.

The largest Mughal Garden in Kashmir valley, Shalimar Bagh is set on the shores of the serene Dal Lake. It covers an area of 31 acres and is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Srinagar. Also known as the ‘House of Love’, this garden is a gorgeous masterpiece enveloped by tall Chinar trees and a number of colourful flowers. The most enchanting thing here is a pristine canal that runs through the centre of the garden. It further amplifies the charm of this delightful tourist attraction of Srinagar. The best time to visit Shalimar Bagh is from May to October.

The second-largest Mughal Garden in Kashmir Valley after Shalimar Bagh, this tourist attraction is popularly known as the ‘Garden of Bliss’. It is situated against the backdrop of the glorious Zabarwan Mountains on the eastern side of the splendid Dal Lake. If you are a nature enthusiast, a couple in love, or a group of family vacationers, then you must visit this dreamlike garden when in Kashmir. The views from here are absolutely breathtaking. The most incredible feature of Nishat Garden is its 12 terraces (each terrace representing a zodiac sign) that are adorned with roses, lilies, and other flowers.
