Diwali is one of the most special festivals in India. Many people celebrate it by lighting diyas and making rangolis, but some also follow rituals that have been passed down through generations. One such tradition is keeping the main door open during Diwali night or Lakshmi Puja. But do you know the story behind this?

Why Do People Keep Their Main Doors Open On Diwali Night?

Diwali is believed to be the night when Goddess Lakshmi enters people’s homes to bless them with wealth, prosperity and happiness. People clean their homes, light diyas, and make rangolis to prepare their spaces to welcome her. Many people may not be aware, but some families also keep their main doors and windows open during Diwali night and while performing Lakshmi Puja.

According to VastuKimaya, it is believed that Lakshmi Maa visits homes that have open doors and are clean and well-lit. Closed doors, on the other hand, are not considered inviting. In Vastu, the main door is considered the mouth of the home, through which life energy or Prana enters. This is why keeping it open is considered auspicious.

Another Reason Behind The Belief

There is also another reason behind this belief. On Diwali, many people keep their doors open to welcome new happiness, good luck and opportunities. It symbolises that a family is keeping its hearts and minds open to welcome growth and positive changes in life.

However, you do not need to keep every door and window open throughout the night. You can keep the main door open during Lakshmi Puja and, depending on your family traditions, decide when to close it afterwards.

Your safety is equally important. If you live in a busy area, you can keep the main door closed, as leaving it open is not compulsory to receive Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings. But do make sure to keep your entrance clean and well-lit. You can also choose to open the windows instead of the main door.
