As passengers travel across the country to celebrate Diwali with their families, many carry sweets, gifts and festive essentials in their luggage. However, those planning to take firecrackers along should be aware of Indian Railways’ strict safety rules. Carrying fireworks on trains is prohibited, as they are classified as explosive and flammable materials that can put passengers at risk. Read on to know more.

Indian Railways Prohibits Passengers From Carrying Firecrackers

According to News18, firecrackers can pose a serious hazard in crowded train compartments. Friction, heat or an accidental spark can trigger a fire, potentially leading to serious injuries and damage. With hundreds of passengers travelling together in enclosed coaches, even a small incident can have dangerous consequences. Indian Railways prohibits passengers from carrying explosives and other dangerous or inflammable materials on trains. The restriction is intended to prevent fires and protect passengers, railway staff and railway property.

What Is The Fine & Punishment For Carrying Firecrackers On Trains?

Carrying prohibited explosive materials on a train can invite legal action under Section 164 of the Railways Act, 1989. The provision deals with carrying dangerous or offensive goods on railway premises or trains without proper authority. An offender can face imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of up to ₹1,000, or both. Passengers should therefore avoid carrying firecrackers in their bags or attempting to transport them in passenger coaches or luggage compartments.
