In India, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) offers optional travel insurance to passengers booking tickets through their online portal. This insurance coverage is available at a nominal premium and can be selected while booking the train ticket.  This railway travel insurance is given to passengers at  ₹0.35 paise while booking tickets. Through this facility, IRCTC provides insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakhs to its passengers. But, how does this work?

An insurance payout of up to ₹10 lakh is made in the event that a passenger dies in a railway accident or sustains permanent disability. The passenger receives compensation in the amount of ₹7.5 lakh if they suffer a partial disability. Passengers receive up to ₹10,000 in compensation for minor injuries, and ₹2 lakh in help for major injuries.

Within four months of being involved in a railway accident, Indian Railways passengers may file an insurance claim. By visiting the insurance company’s office, passengers can submit an insurance claim. The nominee’s name must be included when choosing insurance for a passenger. If such is the case, claiming it in the event of an unfortunate event won’t be an issue.

Here is the step-by-step procedure to get IRCTC travel insurance:

  • When purchasing a ticket, the customer must select the “Travel insurance” option. Then, the insurance firms will send him or her an SMS and send the policy details to their registered email addresses. To submit the nomination information, click on the linked link.
  • The traveller must fill out the nomination information on the website of the appropriate insurance company after purchasing their ticket.
