The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has awarded an all-weather licence to the Donyi Polo Airport in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, marking a major step towards improving air connectivity and enabling night landings. And it has opened new possibilities for the North East.

This news was cheerfully presented by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who described it as a significant advancement for the northeastern state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Arunachal Pradesh’s first greenfield airport in November 2022, paying homage to the ancient respect for the sun (“Donyi”) and moon (“Polo”), two symbols of the region’s cultural heritage.

I’m thrilled to announce an important accomplishment for Arunachal Pradesh! The Chief Minister posted on X that Donyi Polo Airport has received an all-weather permit, opening the door for night landings. Additionally, he shared the DGCA’s letter on the microblogging network.

The airport cost more than ₹640 crore and covered over 690 acres. Also, it has a 2,300-metre runway that makes it suitable for all-weather operations. The contemporary terminal building complies with resource recycling, renewable energy, and energy efficiency guidelines.

Smooth Air Connectivity & Opening Up New Opportunities

The chief minister underlined that the all-weather licence is an important step towards guaranteeing smooth air connectivity and opening up new opportunities for the area’s development.

The Donyi Polo Airport has greatly aided in economic development by acting as a stimulus for trade and tourism in addition to enhancing connectivity. There has been a significant aviation revolution in the northeastern states; aeroplanes are now operating out of multiple airports. It includes Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland.

A noteworthy 113% rise in aircraft movement in the northeast since 2014. It indicates the region’s growing significance on the aviation map, highlights this renaissance in air travel.

The airport features an east-west 2,300-metre runway in its initial phase for narrow-body aircraft. With the potential to be extended to 2,800 metres for wide-body aircraft landings.

The runway is connected to the airport apron by two taxiways, measuring 160 metres by 115 metres. And features both night landing and navigation facilities such as instrument landing systems and DVOR.
