The Federal Tax Authority has launched a new digital platform, which simplifies the VAT refund process. Not to mention, it cuts down on waiting times and gets rid of paperwork. It should be noted that the refund process generally takes up to nine days. But with the new system, tourists can get their money back in just one business day. This is available for travellers at Dubai International Airport, Sharjah International Airport, and Zayed International Airport. The new system is completely paperless, and it uses special recognition technology.

As revealed by Dubai Airport in its post on Instagram, the AI-supported verification makes the process even simpler. Yes, so when tourists shop in the UAE, they can request tax-free receipts on purchase. However, the minimum expenditure should be of AED250. Tourists should also keep their travel documents with them when they shop in order to claim a tax-free tag on the back of the sales receipt.

How Does It Work?

Additionally, visitors will also need to download the Planet app. For those who don’t know, this is the authorised operator of the VAT refund scheme for tourists. They can register to claim back the money on the purchases that they make in the UAE. At the airport, tourists can scan a QR code, which is displayed on screens that are located at the tourist tax refund service points. Once this is scanned, the refund procedure begins through the Planet app. The AI-supported platform will help tourists identify transactions eligible for automatic tax refund directly through the app without any need for in-person verification.

What If A Transaction Requires Inspection?

However, it’s worth mentioning that if the transaction does require inspection, then you will be notified through the app. The Planet app will then direct you to the smart gates that will check your details. Your face will be scanned at the gate to confirm your identity. It will then allow your transaction details to be automatically recognised. After this, the gates will open, and it will direct you to a designated self-service kiosk for the inspection process to be completed.

With the refund process being quicker, the aim is to eliminate bureaucracy across services.
