The Heartbreaking Reason Kumar Vishwas Keeps A Wooden Dog Inside His House

When Kamiya Jani visited Kumar Vishwas for an episode of Sunday Brunch, the conversation moved far beyond poetry, politics, or food. Somewhere between casual banter and stories from home, the camera lingered on a striking wooden sculpture of a Labrador sitting calmly inside the house. It looked uncannily real, and even Kamiya paused to point it out.

A Man’s Best Friend Indeed!

That is when Kumar Vishwas began speaking about Shadow.

Not as one speaks about a pet; it sounded more like someone remembering a family member whose absence still occupies physical space inside a home.

Shadow, his Labrador, lived for nearly thirteen and a half years. Kumar Vishwas described him as an inseparable part of the household; he was present in routines, conversations, and everyday life in the way only longtime pets become. There was familiarity in the way he narrated the memories, almost as if he had replayed them silently to himself many times before.

In Shadow’s later years, age started catching up with him. His health weakened, and his body grew too heavy to manage stairs comfortably. At the time, the family was living on the first floor of a building without a lift. Something as ordinary as going upstairs slowly became painful for the dog!

Kumar Vishwas’ Deep Bond With His Labrador Shadow

Kumar Vishwas recalled how the family would wrap Shadow carefully in a sheet and carry him upstairs. There is a particular helplessness in watching an animal age, especially one that once ran around the same house with energy and ease.

During that period, Vishwas had become fixated on one thought: that he wanted to build a house quickly. Not for status, not for comfort, but so Shadow would not have to struggle with stairs anymore.

The way he narrated this part carried the weight of unfinished timing. Before the new house could be completed, Shadow passed away.

After Shadow’s death, Kumar Vishwas approached an artist from Bastar and requested him to create a wooden sculpture inspired by the Labrador. He wanted it designed exactly the way Shadow used to sit inside the house. The result is the sculpture now placed in his home, realistic enough to momentarily make guests believe an actual dog is resting there.

But the most affecting part of the story came at the end.

Kumar Vishwas shared that even today, whenever he walks past the sculpture, he instinctively stops, pats its head, and says, “Hello beta.”
