A magnificent ski resort in the Italian Alps has decided to usher in the future this year. A plastic free world is not a fantasy, but a safety net. The human race will not survive plastic taking over the Earth, planet Earth will. The European continent’s first plastic free resort is in Italy’s far-north province of Trentino after a big reveal. Nearby glacier Forni was found to contain 131 to 162 million plastic particles. That’s similar to the plastic concentration in European sea waters. Environmental scientists from the University of Milan and the University of Milan-Bicocca hypothesised that particles may have been transported from the ski resort by wind currents.

Forni is one of the largest glaciers in the Dolomite mountain range. About 137,000 skiers visited Pejo 3000 last winter. Three mountain huts in the area will no longer stock plastic. Plastic bottles, bags, disposable cutlery, glasses, straws and other single use plastics have been banned. This also includes condiment sachets like packets of ketchup. Media channels across the globe have used a quote by Christian Casarotto, glaciologist at MUSE, a science museum in Trento to explain the effects of plastic on a glacier. “If plastics reach high altitudes, they remain unchanged for a long time, even decades, and then they return in the form of environmental and health damage, entering our food chain.” We hail this impeccable initiative towards responsible tourism and hope the world follows suit!
