The song was filmed on top of an Ooty train running across the green Nilgiri mountains of Ooty. But did you know Shah Rukh Khan wanted to climb on top of the train’s chimney while shooting the song? Well, director-choreographer Farah Khan spilt the beans on the Chaiyya Chaiyya dance.
Chaiyya Chaiyya Song Originally To Be Shot At Ooty Station
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Farah Khan revealed that initially, they asked permission to shoot the song at the Ooty railway station for four hours. But the authorities refused to shut down the railway station for four hours for the shoot. And that’s when Dil Se director, Mani Ratnam suggested they shoot the song atop a moving train. Farah Khan initially agreed but later wondered how they would shoot.

Shah Rukh Khan Wanted To Dance On Train’s Chimney
Dil Se team got an alternate track with a separate train running between Ooty and Coonoor to shoot Chaiyya Chaiyya for four days. Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora shot the song without using harnesses and safety measures. Farah Khan revealed how Shah Rukh Khan was super excited to shoot the song atop a train. He even wanted to climb on top of the train’s chimney. Farah Khan somehow pulled him down. Despite no rehearsals, they danced on top of the moving train. Today, Chaiyya Chaiyya is one of the most iconic songs of all time.
